The Changin' Times on SHIVAREE (1965)

The Changin' Times were two L.A. based songwriters, Artie Kornfeld and Steve Duboff. They recorded the original, punky version of "The Pied Piper" in a sort of Sonny Bono-goes-garage style in 1965. The next year it would be a top 5 hit for Crispian St. Peters in a much poppier, MOR arrangement.



Also in 1965 the Changin' Times recorded the great fuzz-punker "How Is The Air Up There?". 



"How Is The Air Up There?" was covered by New Zealand's La De Da's in 1966 (a version which found a new audience when it was included on the Nuggets II compliation in 2001). According to Wikipedia the flip side of "How Is The Air Up There?" was a cover of "The Pied Piper".

"How Is The Air Up There?" has also been recorded by The Blues Magoos (where the La De Da's first heard it) and The Bangles in the early '80s, though I've never heard those versions.

From Rat Pfink A Boo Boo, the classic superhero spoof by the late schlockmeister Ray Dennis Steckler -- a film released, it should be remembered, several months before the TV debut of Batman. This rockabilly number was instantly archaic in the age of Beatlemania.

Hong Kong Rocks!

There was  a thriving rock & roll scene in Hong Kong during the 1960s. A number of bands made records, often remakes of American hits:

The Zoundcrackers - "I Gotta Find Cupid" (1965)
This was a cover of a Gary Lewis and The Playboys original which I've never heard. I'm probably safe in assuming this cover version is superior:



The Magic Carpet - "Things Go Better With You"
This is a rather speeded-up version of a minor hit by The April Fools. The original was more sunshine pop, rather than the garage bubblepunk heard here:



The Quests - "Mr Rainbow" (1968)
The Quests -- who were actually from Singapore, but playing in Hong Kong -- had been a successful pop act since 1961, so it's not surprising they took Tomorrow's "Hallucinations", removed the psychedelia, and transformed it into group harmony pop.



The Mystics - "Sweet Soul Music"
This starts off as a bar band remake of Arthur Conley's smash, but then replaces the soul stars of the original with the names of notable Hong Kong performers, even performing bits of their hits! Fans of the HK scene must've gotten a huge kick out of this one.

The Gas Company



Tulsa Oklahoma's Greg Dempsey migrated to Los Angeles in the mid '60s. He and lontime partner Kathy Yesse recorded four singles in 1966-7 as The Gas Company. They were backed by L.A.'s finest session musicians. Jack Nitzsche and Tulsa's Leon Russell were also involved in some of the sessions.

I've only heard two Gas Company tracks, both of which are great. "Get Out Of My Life" is a Turtlesque punker, while "If You Know What I Mean" is wonderful sunshine pop.



In 1968 Dempsey and Yesse would release an excellent psych-folk-rock album as The Daughters Of Albion. Maybe I'll get to that in a future post.

Rodriguez - "I Wonder" (1970)

The son of Mexican immigrants to Michigan, Detroit-based singer-songwriter Rodriguez released two albums in the early '70s. Despite the inevitable comparsions to Dylan the albums didn't sell, and Rodriguez went into the construction business accepting the fact that he would be forgotten.

Except that he wasn't. Somehow, his albums became popular overseas  -- first in Australia, then South Africa. Totally unknown in his home country, in South Africa he drew 5,000+ crowds. All this interest led to his albums being issued on CD and a tour of the US (his first ever) this spring -- he'll be back here for a few west coast dates in June.

Deaf School - "What A Way To End It All" (1975)

An "art-glam punk" band from Liverpool. Note the quote from "Starman" (which is actually a quote from "You Keep Me Hangin' On"):

The Rumbles, Ltd - "Jezebel" (1967)

This is the same "Jezebel" that was a huge hit in the early 50s for Frankie Laine. Desi Arnaz sings it in an episode of I Love Lucy, and Herman's Hermits did it in the mid '60s.

But this is my favorite version, a sort of popedelic, blue-eyed soul cover from 1967. The Rumbles Ltd were from Lincoln, Nebraska and apparently still gig there to this day.

The original version of "Little Bit O' Soul" by the English band The Little Darlings (1965). Two years later it was a #2 US hit for Ohio's Music Explosion.

One of the definitive US garage-punk cuts, it was actually written by the UK team of John Carter and Ken Lewis (Ivy League, Flowerpot Men).

The Fading Tribesmen - "More Feathers" (196?)

Aside from this track, I know nothing about this band -- not where they came from, not the the year of the track's release, not even what label it was released on.

Yes, it's a blatant imitation of Chris Montez's "Let's Dance" -- but that doesn't stop it from grinding its way into your brain and refusing to leave.

Blue

Blue was a band from Scotland that released two excellent albums in the first half of the 1970s on Robert Stigwood's RSO label. They are very reminiscent of Big Star, though whether they heard Mr. Chilton's band at the time I don't know. Despite the sponsorship of supermogul Stigwood, Blue's records failed to sell and they were let go by RSO, turning up again in 1977 on Elton John's Rocket label. Their Rocket single, "Gonna Capture Your Heart" hit the UK top 20 and even scraped the US hot 100. Shortly afterward the band relocated to L.A. but was unable to repeat this success.

Soul, Inc. - "I Belong To Nobody" (1968)



These guys were apparently one of the most popular bands in Louisville, Kentucky.


"I Belong To Nobody" was their biggest hit, making No. 1 locally and allegedly charting in several other cities after getting picked up for national distribution by the Laurie label.

(Some of you out there may know "I Belong To Nobody" via a 1980 cover by the Australian band The Flaming Hands. How a band in Australia heard an obscure 1960s record from Kentucky is a story I'd like to learn someday.)

I first heard "I Belong To Nobody" about 15 years ago on Rock & Roll Revival with Joe Donovon, a now-legendary all night radio show on Louisville's WLAS-AM. As I recall, some high school teahcer and record collector was Donovon's guest, and brought in a bunch of 45s by Louisville acts. This is the one that has stayed in my mind. It has a rueful melancholy that haunts you (and which the Flaming Hands remake never quite managed to capture). It should have been a much bigger hit.

"You Rub Me The Wrong Way" - The Road (1968)




One of the great garage-rockers of the late '60s, I first heard this in the '80s on volume 2 of the classic Pebbles compilations. All I know about this band is what I read on the http://www.buckeyebeat.com website:

Not much is know about this Painesville teen band. In 1968 they were recruited by a slightly older Painesville musician, Dave Passerallo, to make a record. The Hard Road session at Audio Recording yeilded a strange pop effort with odd psych flourishes as the A-side, "So Hard To Find". The song was written by Onion Rings member Jim Finan, who presumably provided the link to Blue Onion Records. Of more interest to us is the flip side, "You Rub Me the Wrong Way", a Passerallo penned three chord rocker with some blistering fuzz guitar. The Hard Road 45 was initially released on Passerallo's Lemon Lime label but after getting airplay for "It's So Hard Ro Find", Dale Davis' Blue Onion label picked up the record for wider release. An Audio Recording acetate has surfaced pairing "You Rub Me The Wrong Way" with a nice garage ballad, "By The Fire", a song that Passerallo had wrote and recorded with his vocal group the Four Escorts.




By 1968 The Road's sound of fuzz guitar and Vox organ was considered unfashionable, so it's not surprising "You Rub Me The Wrong Way" went nowhere commercially. It wouldn't truly be appreciated until the Pebbles series came out a decade later.

I'll Cry Out From My Grave


Shaun Harris was the bassist for the 1960s cult favorites The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band -- an outfit that, I must confess, I've never heard (although their tumultuous history reads like it would make an interesting screenplay). The WCPAEB broke up in 1970, and the next year Harris released a half sunshine-pop, half country-rock single called "I'll Cry Out From My Grave (God I'm Sorry)," under the name Brigadune.



Two years later Harris released a self-title solo album with backing by L.A.'s Wrecking Crew and harmony vocals by Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. The album featured a remake of Harris' Brigadune single, here given the less cumbersome (and less ghoulish) title "I'll Cry Out". The CD reissue includes a mono single mix that sounds a bit less overproduced, thanks to less reliance on CS&N-style backing vocals.

The Fogcutters - "Cry, Cry, Cry!" (1965)





























The Fogcutters were from Denver. They sounded kinda like The Beau Brummels would've sounded if they hasn't rehearsed much. They never made the national charts, but this record DID get heard by a national audience -- it was used in an episode of THE FUGITIVE TV series. IIRC, it was heard over a transistor radio as some teenage punks harass Dr. Richard Kimble, an innocent victim of blind justice. I can't say for sure why this record was used, presumably because it was released on the Liberty label, which was owned by United Artists -- producers of THE FUGITIVE.

This is a very simple, almost primitve record that has nevertheless stayed with me since I first heard it 15 years ago. It's crying out for a remake -- perhaps Yo La Tengo is looking for material?
